Legal Support For A Smooth And Successful Adoption

The goal of adoption is a happy ending for the child. But along the way, there may be legal bumps in the road or tensions with a biological parent who is not on board with the transition.

Let us be your guide. The Law Offices of Pepi Camerlingo, P.C., is a family law firm with experience in the legal facets of adoption. We handle stepparent adoptions and related adoptions, including contested proceedings.

Facilitating The Adoption Process

Adoption typically takes many months and involves many “hoops,” such as background checks, financial paperwork and home studies. With 35 years of combined experience, our lawyers are equipped to guide adoptive parents through the legal maze, avoiding pitfalls and clearing away any obstacles. We take the time to explain the process and what to expect at each stage, and follow through to make it as seamless and efficient as possible.

We can assist with:

  • Private adoptions and adoption agreements
  • Stepparent adoptions to cement the bonds of blended families
  • Related adoptions by grandparents, older siblings or other relatives

Contested Adoptions

Ideally, biological parents who are absent or unable to care for the child will consent to adoption. Sometimes, one birth parent or other family members raise objections. Our attorneys, we have represented adoptive parents in various contested adoption scenarios:

  • The birth mom wants to put the child up for adoption, but the father does not.
  • A biological father who has not been in the picture comes forward to assert parental rights.
  • The birth mother does not relinquish parental rights.

In a contested adoption hearing, a judge will listen to arguments from both sides and determine whether to allow the adoption to continue or terminate adoption proceedings. This may involve testimony about whether the objecting parent is unfit. These proceedings can be intensely emotional for all involved, but the court is concerned with what is in the best interests of the child.
